Improving animal welfare means ….
Rescuing mistreated dogs
Main problems
- Dogs locked up with insufficient space to move
- Dogs chained up or on a leash that is too short
What we do
- Talk to pet owners: we inform them about animal protection regulations and explain how to improve the situation
- Inform the city hall and the Guardia Civil about maltreatment (if the situation does not improve)
Providing medical treatment to stray cats
Main problem
- Road traffic accidents (mainly cats)
What we do
- Ensure medical treatment
- Provide foster care for a few days (if necessary)
Neutering feral cats
Main problems
- A large number of feral cats live in green zones and abandoned houses in Moraira, Teulada und Benissa as well as coastal areas where tourists spend their holidays.
- The cat population increases rapidly. Due to malnutrition, the animals are vulnerable to diseases.
What we do
- Catch feral cats and take them to local vets ( for health check-up and neutering)
- Feed sterilized cats at feeding stations that we set up for them
- Foster tame young cats as long as there is a chance to find a permanent home for them
Looking after feral cat colonies
Main problem
- A large number of feral cats who have been neutered, need our continuous attention.
What we do
- Set up feeding stations
- Make sure that the same volunteer always takes care of a specific feeding station. This ensures that we can identify newcomers very quickly
- Sterilize all newcomers
- Catch ill feral cats to provide medical treatment
Finding foster parents
Main problems
- Podencos abandoned by hunters
- Abandoned and mistreated dogs and cats who are handed over to us
- Abandoned kittens and puppies
- Pets of people who passed away
What we do
- Ensure adequate medical treatment
- Find suitable local foster families
- Place dogs in a pet hotel if we cannot find a foster parent quickly
“The daily fee of a pet hotel can add up quickly, These bills sometimes put a considerable strain on our finances. Please support us through donations”.
Taking care of orphaned or abandoned kittens
Main problems
- People abandon kittens shortly after their birth in rubbish bins, in the street or in parks
- Owners of pets abandon young animals when the first medical bills are about to come
What we do
- Ensure medical treatment
- Find foster parents
- Rehome the animals once they are old enough
Fighting for animal rights
Main problems
- Treatment of animals does not reflect EU and Spanish law
- People prioritize their relationship to neighbours over the rights of animals
- Local police does not identify sufficiently with animal protection or has too much other work to do
What we do
- Talk to pet owners, informing them about laws and local regulations
- Inform city hall when pet owners do not act according to local regulations
- Campaign on Facebook
- Try to get interviewed by the local and regional press
- Work together with other animal welfare organizations on local, regional and national level
Rehoming our pets
Main problem
- Foster parents cannot provide a home on a permanent basis. Often they already have their own pets or they only live in Spain for a number of months per year.
What we do
- Look for permanent homes for our animals. We find new homes by placing ads in local newspapers, through our Facebook page as well as our website.
